I'm not exactly sure why this textbook summer blockbuster wound up in early October. It can't be because the studio thought it sucked, because this thing is practically a masterpiece compared to a lot of the bilge pumped out of Hollywood between March and September. Real Steel is good natured, the robot fights are about as exciting as this sort of FX action ever gets and the story more or less makes sense, at least until they just throw everything on the screen to try and get the happiest ending possible. Now, it is too dependent on the charisma of Hugh Jackman and while these filmmakers knew what emotional beats they wanted their story to hit, they clearly had no idea how to actually hit them. But in a world where somebody, somewhere, somehow decided to make a sequel to Human Centipede, this movie is like a shining light of quality storytelling.
In the year 2020 (yes, 9 years from now) human boxers have been replaced by 15 foot tall robots who beat the hydraulic fluid out of each other. A washed up ex-boxer named Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) now drives from town to town, operating his own fighting 'bot and falling further and further into debt as one after the other of his desperate get-rich-quick attempts fall apart before his eyes. Then Charlie's informed an old girlfriend has died and he gets one more avaricious idea. He sells his parental rights to his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) in order to get the money to buy another robot.
When Charlie's self-destructive ego gets that machine trashed, he's left with nothing
until Max finds an old robot in the junkyard. He fixes it up despite Charlie's discouragement and the old 'bot, named Atom, becomes the vehicle through which father and son bond and Charlie finally gets his shot at the big time.
A PG-13 rating is no longer a sign of family friendly entertainment, if it ever was. A lot of them tend to be R rated material that's been cut down to barely make it under the standard. Real Steel is a PG rated film that had a few needless S-words thrown in to get the 13 added on. Several decades ago, this would have almost been considered G rated entertainment. Unless you don't want your kid to be exposed to computer generated carnage inflicted on computer generated constructs, this movie should be acceptable to most parents.
Though the pacing is a bit slack, Real Steel manages to start at Point A and proceed in a relatively logical fashion through Points B, C and D before concluding at Point E. The emotional subtext to those plot mechanics, however, is all screwed up. I mean, it's like these filmmakers had never heard of what a character arc was or how to construct one. For instance, Charlie Kenton starts out as an unlikable jerk. He's arrogant, reckless and thinks nothing of making a bet and then running out on it when he loses. But except for one scene where he acts like he just came from having a breakthrough at his therapist's office, Charlie is pretty much the same arrogant, reckless jerk through the whole movie. He is never forced to confront his flaws and then overcome them. Put somebody less charming than Jackman in the role and most of the audience would wind up rooting for Charlie to fail.
Real Steel's big climax is also a rip off of Rocky where the overmatched challenger takes the superior champion to a draw and wins a moral victory. But unlike the Oscar-winning motion picture that went to great pains to convince the audience that Rocky couldn't possible beat Apollo Creed and going the distance is the only win he could ever get, this film has Atom beat a series of superior robots in the lead up to his championship battle. Every time Atom is shown defeating another 'bot, it destroys the premise that he can't win the big one. Rocky was given his title shot out of the blue as a stunt. If he had earned it with a string of knockout victories, why wouldn't viewers expect him to beat Creed?
The two previous paragraphs are the sort of thing that happen over and over in this film. The story consistently gets to these moments of drama only for them to fizzle because nothing was done to properly or effectively build up to them. It's weird because the plot works well enough and the emotional beats are mostly correct for when they happen, but instead of the plot working toward those beats, it works against them. I'm not sure I've ever seen a script so proficient in one thing and deficient in another.
And for those interested, Evangeline Lilly playing another ex-lover of Charlie's is as sexy and appealing as you ever get in PG-13 cinema. I was never a big fan of Lost so I didn't pay that much attention to Lilly, but whoa! She needs to play this same sort of role in an R-rated flick as soon as possible.
Even with its flaws, Real Steel is an enjoyable way to get out of the house for a couple of hours and sometimes that's all a movie has to be.

I put off seeing this movie a couple of years because if you've seen the trailer you almost have seen the film. The story is one big fat lump of predictability. It just goes straight to the end without any twist, turn or unexpected event. Jackman plays his stereotypical roll well and the Visual Effects (the reason I did see the film) are done excellently well. The CG robots are almost indistinguishable from the animatronic ones. But besides that they just rehashed one of the blueprint scripts from the vault and added nothing to the genre, cinema or the art of filmmaking in general. This movie might have some value to families with kids or kids themselves (I guess they are the target audience) who aren't already jaded by the output of the clone factory named Hollywood.
